Behind the Lens

martin matlack images photography is a combination of nostalgia, unique visuals, and connections to distinct moments in time.

Sharing a Lifelong Passion

Picture
Martin's photography has been featured in multiple publications and art shows.  Select pieces won international awards. Although his artistic presence was previously showcased in a specific niche (typically, train enthusiast-oriented), he has extended his reach to various art shows.  He continues to attend art showcases and fairs throughout the Southwestern United States.

Artist Profile

Picture
Martin Matlack is a New Mexico native with a life-long passion for photography and railroads. Trained as a photojournalist, he delights in capturing people in their normal everyday element – today’s term is “Street Photography”.
“You have to train yourself to see in black and white. I believe that this medium has an emotion not found in color photography – the subtle variations in light and shadow impart a magic and mystery to the image – in effect, they enable a storytelling aspect that is greatly diminished if not absent in a color image."

Picture
Martin shoots primarily with a medium format Mamiya C220, RB67 or Pentax 67. A Nikon Coolpix S3500 is within reach at all times, as is his iPhone. He processes his own black & white film and does all the post-processing work in-house. Printing is managed by an Epson Pro 3880 printer and he mats his own images.
